Community outreach

Community Outreach

Our outreach efforts are the time that we can give back to our community as a thank you for showing their support during the year. In the month of August alone, our students participated in 10 community events, showcasing their skills in robotics while learning valuable presentation skills.  Students speak to a diverse audience about robotics while contributing to the revitalization of the McKeesport area through their service to the local community. We share the excitement and value of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through extensive, year round outreach activities. We believe our greatest impact is made by enabling others to see, touch and enjoy robots and robotics --one person at a time. Through our outreach efforts, we have interacted with more than 10,000 individuals over the lifetime of our team, showcasing FIRST, STEM education and robotics.

Featured Charity: Autism Speaks

This year, Team 1708 is fundraising for the charity Autism Speaks as part of our community outreach. Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.

Relay for Life

The Relay for Life is the signature event for the American Cancer Society that recognizers survivors, promotes awareness and raises funds toward finding a cure. Each year Team 1708 participates in Relay for Life by providing entertainment and fundraising for this annual event.

Every year in November, Amp’D Robotics raises funds to support men’s health by participating in Movember. We ask individuals to participate by growing a ‘mo (a mustache) during the month, and students to vote for their favorite by donating to support to their champion.
